AMS 2 Pro Power Adapter and Switching Adapter Explained: When Do You Need One?

Published August 20, 2026

Researched guide

You do not need an external power adapter if you only use the AMS 2 Pro for feeding filament. For drying, X1 and P1 printers need one official Switching Adapter for each drying unit, while H2D and H2S printers can power one drying unit directly (additional drying units need an adapter). How this guide was made

Whether you need to buy the external AMS 2 Pro Switching Adapter depends on two things: whether you plan to use the drying feature, and which Bambu Lab printer you own.

This guide summarizes what Bambu Lab’s wiki and store pages say as of October 25, 2026. Bambu updates these pages with firmware, so check them before you buy.

Power adapter requirements by printer and use

ScenarioAdapter needed?What Bambu’s pages saySource
Feeding filament onlyNoAutomatic feeding needs the bus cables and a filament buffer or AMS Hub. No external power adapter is needed.EU Store
Drying on X1 or P1 seriesYes, one per drying unitEach AMS 2 Pro that dries needs its own adapter. If you do not dry on every unit, an adapter is not mandatory for all of them.Wiki FAQ
Drying on H2D or H2S, one unitNoThe printer can power one AMS 2 Pro for drying. If it prints and dries at the same time, drying power is reduced automatically so printing gets priority. Bambu recommends the external adapter for the best drying results.Wiki FAQ
Drying on H2D or H2S, more than one unitYesThe wiki says drying several units at once needs an adapter. Bambu’s store text says units used for drying while others print need an external adapter.Wiki FAQ, EU Store
AMS HTNoThe AMS HT uses its own power cord when drying on H2D, X1, and P1 series printers.Wiki FAQ

Not covered here: the X2 series, A1 series, and X1E. Check Bambu’s product page for your model, because support and power rules differ by printer and firmware.

Does the upgrade kit include the adapter?

Upgrade Kit 1 (for connecting a single AMS 2 Pro to an X1 or P1 printer) includes the AMS 2 Pro Switching Adapter, according to Bambu’s UK store listing. The listing also shows a filament buffer, a 4-pin bus cable, a 4-in-1 PTFE adapter (or three PTFE couplers), and PTFE tubes (one 370 mm and two 550 mm).

Upgrade Kit 2 is for X1 and P1 owners who plan to connect more than one AMS 2 Pro. It has an AMS Hub in place of the filament buffer, and Bambu’s UK listing shows it also includes one Switching Adapter.

Do you need an adapter for every AMS 2 Pro?

Bambu’s pages put this two ways:

  • The wiki says that on X1 and P1 printers each AMS 2 Pro that dries needs its own adapter. If you do not dry on every unit, you do not need one for all of them.
  • A store page says drying takes a long time, so you rarely need several adapters running at once.

The simplest way to decide is to count how many units you plan to dry at the same time. The power adapter calculator does that count for you.

Can the AMS 2 Pro dry on its own?

No. The wiki says it cannot dry without a connection to the printer. It must stay connected by the 6-pin cable.

Official adapter or a third-party one?

Bambu specifies the official AMS 2 Pro Switching Adapter. Its US store page says damage from third-party adapters is not covered by the warranty.
