Filament Drying Calculator
Select your thermoplastic polymer, spool construction material, and current room humidity to calculate safe dehydration parameters that won't melt your spool into a fused plastic mass.

Standard PlasticPLA Dehydration Guidance: PLA has a low glass transition temperature of ~55°C. Never exceed 50°C in an enclosure dryer, or the strands on the core will bond together.
Why Uncalibrated Kitchen Ovens Melt 3D Printer Spools
A household electric or gas oven controls temperature using a simple on/off hysteresis thermostat. When set to 60°C, the heating coils glow red-hot at over 300°C during active heating cycles, causing radiant heat spikes that easily exceed the glass transition temperature (Tg) of filament spools within minutes.
Signs Your Filament Has Absorbed Water:
- Acoustic Popping / Crackling: Distinct steam pop noises emanating from the hotend nozzle during extrusion.
- Steam Vapors: Visible micro-wisps of vapor rising from the heater block.
- Brittle Filament Snap: If your filament snaps when bent 90° in your hands, the polymer chains have experienced hydrolytic degradation.
