Can the AMS 2 Pro Dry Filament Without a Printer? Standalone Use Explained

Published August 26, 2026

Researched guide

No. According to Bambu Lab’s official FAQ and setup guides, the AMS 2 Pro cannot dry filament on its own without a connection to a Bambu Lab printer. Even when plugged into the external 24V 4A Switching Adapter, it has no onboard screen or physical buttons and must stay connected to the printer via the 6-pin bus cable to start and control drying. How this guide was made

Because Bambu Lab sells an external 24V 4A Switching Adapter for the AMS 2 Pro, many buyers assume they can plug the unit into a wall outlet on a workbench and run it as a standalone 4-spool filament dryer. Bambu Lab’s official documentation states that this does not work.

Why the AMS 2 Pro requires a printer connection to dry

RequirementHow the AMS 2 Pro WorksSource
Control InterfaceThe AMS 2 Pro has no external screen, temperature dial, or start button. Drying must be started from the printer touchscreen, Bambu Studio, or Bambu Handy.Workflow Wiki
6-Pin Bus CommunicationThe unit must remain connected to a powered-on Bambu Lab printer via the 6-pin bus cable so the printer can read the internal humidity/temperature sensors and send heater/vent commands.AMS 2 Pro FAQ
Role of the 24V 4A AdapterThe external Switching Adapter only supplies 24V 4A heater power when the host printer (like an X1 or P1, or a 2nd/3rd unit on an H2D) cannot provide enough wattage over the 6-pin cable. It does not make the unit independent.X1/P1 Drying Wiki

Can you dry in one AMS 2 Pro while printing from another?

While you cannot unplug the AMS 2 Pro from the printer completely, you can use a spare AMS 2 Pro as a dedicated drying station while it remains daisy-chained to the printer:

  • On EU Store and Wiki FAQ pages, Bambu states that if you have multiple AMS 2 Pro units connected via the 6-pin bus chain and powered by external 24V 4A Switching Adapters, you can dry filament in idle AMS 2 Pro units while the printer prints from another unit or an external spool.
  • On newer firmware (H2D v01.03.00.00+, H2S/P2S v01.02.00.00+), Bambu Lab’s workflow wiki also notes you can initiate drying from Bambu Studio’s Device page while printing, though drying temperature is lowered during printing.

Sealed dry-box storage when unplugged

If you disconnect the AMS 2 Pro from the printer to store spools on a shelf, its rubber perimeter seal and desiccant compartment (using color-changing yellow-to-purple silica gel) still act as a passive airtight storage box, and the air intake/exhaust vents remain closed when not in active drying mode. However, the heaters, fans, and spool rotation will not run unplugged.
